Modbus

Modbus is a commonly-used industrial communications protocol. It was originally designed for Modicon (Schneider Electric) PLCs, but is now a de facto standard protocol used by many product manufacturers.

BACnet

BACnet is a communications protocol for building automation and control. Compared to the simplicity of the Modbus protocol, BACnet is much more complex and attempts to provide high-level functionality like auto-discovery of devices.
